Cherry Creek Tests Highland Park

Scots fall 39-51 to the Bruins

It was to be a night to remember, but not for what you might think.  It was during halftime at the Highland Park game against Colorado powerhouse, Cherry Creek that the field at Highland Stadium would be officially named the Randy Allen field in honor of the Scots head coach.  Also during halftime the Scots would recognize Scott Smith, one of the best quarterbacks and a former Highland Park coach.

What it turned out to be was a night the players of Highland Park will never forget.  They started out strong with a touchdown pass from Buck Randall to Benton Owen.   Cherry Creek answered with a touchdown only to have the extra point blocked and returned by Jonathan Boyanovsky for two points.

The Scots struggled fumbling twice which Cherry Creek turned into touchdowns. The Scots found themselves trailing at halftime, 17-27.

Cherry Creek continued to dominate while Highland Park struggled to get something going offensively.

When all hope looked lost the Scots scored a touchdown, kicked an onside kick and went on to score a touchdown with a Randall pass to Case Messer. Scots trailed 39-44 with under a minute left.  The Scots kicked an onside kick, they thought they had gotten the ball but it was called Cherry Creek’s.  They took the opportunity to run a quick play up the middle for a touchdown and an extra point that was good,  giving the Scots their first loss of the season.

What the Scots players will remember is not so much that they lost but that when it looked as if they had no hope, they pulled together and worked as a team to score thenbget the ball back and score again to pull within five points of Cherry Creek, had they gotten the onside kick they had the momentum to win the game.  They now know they can win a game if they find themselves behind again.
