Despite lightning delays Highland Park held the annual scrimmage against Plano East.
Scrimmages are always interesting; if you don’t know what is going on they can be confusing. One team lines up its first string offense against the other team’s first string defense. They will run a specific number of plays, then the ball goes to the other team’s offense, and the first strings line up again. After both teams run plays, the second-string players line up, and it continues until the coaches have determined they have seen what they need to see of their own players or time runs out.
The Scots had a unique situation; their starting quarterback wasn’t playing, so they were able to see how their backup quarterbacks would perform with the starters and the second string.
This scrimmage against Plano East provided the Scots a true test in an almost practice setting. Returning starters for the Scots are limited. One starting player returns on the defensive side of the ball, Beau Jones. The offense only has five returning starters, Buck Randall, linemen Stuart Allday and Tripp Townsend, and running back Matthew White, receiver Cannon Bozman.
Plano East showed a few things the Scots could work on. New players stepped up and showed what they can add to the equation of a successful team.
