Lake Highlands hands the Scots their first district loss
Friday night was a weird one, wearing all Scots gear on High School employee was enjoying catching his middle school daughter cheer for the Wildcats. If the Lake Highlands band director looked familiar that’s because he use to be the Scots’ band director. The HPISD Athletic director was very familiar with Wildcat stadium, he was their head football Coach until the Scots were lucky enough to have him join the HP family.
Making it even stranger was to see the Scots football team struggle all night. It took two days but Lake Highlands defeated Highland Park for only the fifth time in their nineteen Varsity football matchups. The Scots came out flat compared to a week earlier when they confidently defeated Lewisville.
Lake Highlands on the other hand was ready, scoring on their first play from scrimmage with a 75 yard pass to Miron Magee. Wildcats took the lead with just seconds off of the clock, never relinquishing it despite multiple lightning delays.
Standing on the Highland Park side of the field, spectators were witnessing lightning as it periodically would strike off in the distance and an actual light breeze. Halftime came, the Scots trailed the Wildcats, 13-30.
Both schools bands and drill teams performed during half time. Warming up, the teams were ready to take the field for the second half. Mother nature had other plans. Before the players could take the field the first lightning delay was called. A few rain drops began to fall and fans for both teams took cover, many leaving all in their cars.
After repeated lightning delays, the players returned the field, the Scots came out and scored a touchdown. The Scots came out for the second half after delays with a little more fire, scoring two touchdowns, both short runs into the endzone by quarterback Warren Peck. Between Scots’ touchdowns, Lake Highlands broke a tackle and scored With the score 27-37, Scots still trailing the Wildcats, lightning lit up the sky just north of the stadium and the loudest, longest thunder brought another lightning delay. With the clock nearing midnight, it was determined the two teams would reconvene on Saturday for the final 8 minutes and 29 seconds of play. Play would resume the following day at 2pm as if they never stopped.
The Scots showed up Saturday knowing they had to score while stopping the Wildcats offense. When the final seconds ticked off the clock almost nineteen hours after the original kickoff the Scots came up short, final score of 41-51 leaves the Scots with their first loss of the season.
Next Friday, head to Highlander Stadium for a 7pm kickoff against Irving High school.
