Another Roller Coaster of a Game for Scots

Buck Randall of HP leads the Scots to a 70-66 win over Tyler High School.

Scots comeback 70-66 over Tyler

Matthew White runs the ball for the Scots against Tyler High School, White had five touchdowns for the night.

The Scots went ahead quickly 21-0 over Tyler in CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium, Tyler, Texas.  As the first quarter came to an end, it appeared that HP was going to be scoring a lot and might put Tyler away early.

One of those thoughts was correct.  Matthew White and Harrison Cullum scored the Scots’ first three touchdowns of the night. Sutton Stock hit each of the point after attempts as he did all night, ultimately hitting ten of them.

The second quarter brought two touchdown runs by Buck Randall, another short run by Matthew White and a beautiful catch by Jack Swaldi as he made his way into the endzone. Unfortunately, someone had woken up the Tyler team, they scored four touchdowns during the second quarter.  The Scots had the ball with one second left in the half.  Knowing Coach Randy Allen likes to score before heading into the locker room there were a few options of what play he might call.  The Scots decided a little razzle-dazzle was called for. As the last second of the first half ticked off the clock, the Scots began to lateral the ball backwards to avoid tackles.  It began to look like it might work, with every new ball handler getting closer to the end zone, then the ball popped loose, the Scots fumbled the ball.  Tyler’s Markeithian Potts picked up the ball and ran 76 yards for a Tyler touchdown.  The Scots entered the halftime locker room with a 49-42 lead.

The third quarter found Tyler scoring a field goal by Marvin Espinal and a touchdown giving them a 52-49 lead for the first time of the night.

In the fourth quarter with 4:06 left in the game, the Scots trailed by ten points. Buck Randall hit Case Messer deep in the corner of the endzone to add some life to the Scots.  With a quick tempo offense, the Scots hit a few short passes and ultimately turned to Matthew White, who fought his way down the far sideline and tumbled into the endzone for his fifth touchdown of the night.

Tyler attempted to score one more time but Thomas Cook chased down Tyler quarterback Caden Granberry, forcing a turnover less than two minutes left, the Scots took the victory formation over the ball and a 70-66 win over Tyler.

A few stats to consider, Matthew White ran for 129 yards and received passes of 84 yards. Harrison Cullum pulled in 61 yards of passing and Charlie Olmstead 158 yards in receptions. Buck Randall passed for 467 yards on the night, including for three touchdowns while he personally ran for two touchdowns.

Head to Highlander next Friday at 7pm to see the Scots take on Red Oak.
